10 Announced Movie Remakes That COULD Be Great
1. The Gunfighter
And last but certainly not least, we have by far the oldest movie on this list now - the 1950 Gregory Peck-starring Western The Gunfighter.
Henry King's original stars Peck as an infamous gunslinger who attempts to escape his violent past, and honestly, it's shocking that it's taken three-quarters of a century for someone to finally put a remake together.
Though The Gunfighter remains a well-regarded Western, it's never quite soared to the iconic levels of other genre efforts from the same period such as The Searchers, Rio Bravo, Shane, and so on.
And so, the recent confirmation of a remake doesn't seem quite so sacrilegious, especially as Ethan Hawke will not only be starring in the Peck role, but co-writing the script alongside Shelby Gaines.
Even if Hawke's stature as an Oscar-nominated actor and screenwriter wasn't enough, he's also a huge fan of The Gunfighter and has performed well in a bevy of Western projects to date, most prominently the remake of The Magnificent Seven and recent TV series The Good Lord Bird. Plus, Hawke is also being considered to direct.
While it'd be great if this remake also led to more folk discovering Peck's original, it's also clear that Hawke is mounting this remake out of nothing less than pure passion for the source material.
If it fails, it won't be for a lack of enthusiasm.
