10 Announced Movie Remakes That COULD Be Great
5. Cliffhanger
A sequel to the Sylvester Stallone-starring 1993 mountaineering thriller Cliffhanger has been in development for more than 30 years, though last year it was announced that the planned legacy sequel, which would've featured Stallone in a supporting role, has been scrapped in favour of a reboot.
This new Cliffhanger will gender-swap the protagonist, with Lily James starring as a climber who fights to rescue her kidnapped father (Pierce Brosnan) from terrorists.
From the few official set photos, it's clear that James has gotten into incredible shape for the part, and while the new Cliffhanger is being directed by journeyman filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, the script has encouragingly been penned by a most unexpected name - Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night).
Cliffhanger 2025 doesn't need to be a storytelling masterpiece to succeed - it just needs to recapture the white-knuckle thrills of its predecessor, and given director Collet-Serra's prior success with visceral survival thriller The Shallows, as well as the film's practical location shooting, it just might work.
