10 Annoying Flaws That Stop Great Directors Being Perfect
4. J.J Abrams - Lens Flares
Before I begin, let me first address one of the biggest problems with J.J Abrams, which is his inability to have a single original idea. Playing it safe and not subverting expectations is okay for most directors, but when you're bestowed with the honour and responsibility of rebooting both Star Trek and Star Wars, you have to be expected to be a bit daring with the narrative.
But enough about poor narrative choices, let's talk lens flares!
It might be the smallest issue on this list, but it is just as insufferable to witness on screen. The streams that spew from random light sources only happen for a brief second at a time, but when it occurs so frequently in one film audiences are left wondering if there was something wrong with the cameras on the day of shooting.
It might be excusable if the blinding flares served to obscure a secret character's identity or make the audiences feel like a character being blinded by light. But unfortunately not, as the lights bounce off the corner of a table on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, we realise Abrams just likes to put his a needless twist on screen.
Not unlike his need for a mystery box.
