10 Anticipated Movie Sequels Stuck In Development Hell
9. A True Cloverfield Sequel
In 2008, long before helming The Batman or both Dawn of and War for the Planet of the Apes, Matt Reeves directed Cloverfield and completely changed the entire found-footage genre. It was a game-changer, and unsurprisingly, there were sequels that followed, though not in the traditional sense.
10 Cloverfield Lane released in 2016, followed by The Cloverfield Paradox in 2018, neither of which acted as direct sequels to the original. In the same way that 28 Weeks Later was set in the same universe but had nothing to do with the story of 28 Days Later, the original Cloverfield never had a true follow-up.
However, there was a direct sequel announced way back in 2018, just months after the release of The Cloverfield Paradox. It's just that nothing has come of it yet. J.J. Abrams said at the time that Cloverfield 2 was "coming soon", though here we are seven years later, and still nothing.
Details have been scarce on the film, outside the fact that Joe Barton and Babak Anvari will write the script and direct, respectively, while both J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves will produce. This news came about four years ago, and though it seems as if there has been no movement since, the franchise has a history with surprise trailers and releases, so it genuinely could just drop out of nowhere at any moment.
