10 Apocalypse Horror Movies That Don't Involve Zombies
5. Delicatessen
Set in a post-apocalypse where food runs the world and is the main source of currency and conflict, French horror Delicatessen takes a surrealistic look at the terrible choices those involved can make, both by forced hand and of their own awful volition.
The film focuses primarily on the inhabitants of a single apartment building, where the landlord and local butcher has taken advantage of the prevasive starvation, and lures people to the store with an offer of a job, in order to butcher the applicants for prized meat. This allows total control over the residents, even forcing them to give each other up for meat if they can’t pay the rent - right up until the landlord’s daughter complicates matters and falls in love with his newest hire and intended victim, Louison.
It’s an inherently dark tale, especially as it examines the living environment and resistance movements generated within German-occupied Europe through its cannibalistic lens. However, the darkly comedic tone threaded throughout allows the film to deliver a unique spin on the apocalypse horror genre, like much classic of French horror, and provides a ray of hope in the actions of its core couple. Just maybe pick vegetarian for your meal-and-a-movie with this one, lest the long pig put you off your lunch.
