10 Artists Who Made Entire Movie Soundtracks

2. Flash Gordon - Queen

It almost makes too much sense to give a band like Queen the task of making a film soundtrack. Since Freddie Mercury's mannerisms were already mesmerizing on the live stage, hearing that same music brought to an over the top movie like Flash Gordon is practically a slam dunk. Even with the standard that they hold though, hearing Brian May's guitar on an album like this feels more like a proper Queen album than just some throwaway project.

Across every single song on this soundtrack, Freddie actually takes a back seat some of the time, with Brian stepping forward to give us some of the greatest guitar symphonies that he has ever put on tape. Having been in the game for a while, May's knowledge of layering different harmonies on top of each other works perfectly with the Flash Gordon narrative, almost like the sounds of different lasers have come to life and are creating the backing track for most of the song.

As much as some of this fits in as a traditional score, the band even managed to get a hit out of the deal with the title track, with the rest of the track listing being reserved for Brian tearing through different scales on songs like the Ring or Crash Dive on Mingo City. Queen were always meant to be slightly over the top at the best of times, and having a record like this just geared them up for going even bigger on records like a Kind of Magic a few years down the road.
