4. Best Original Score €“ All Is Lost

The Best Original Score category wasn't particularly strong this year, though the clear stand-outs were Hans Zimmer's work on 12 Years A Slave, and Steven Price's on Gravity. Fine though Alex Ebert's work on All Is Lost was, did it really deserve to topple the far more memorable, epic work done by Zimmer and Price in particular? I'm not convinced. It's fair to say that Zimmer's re-use of the same leitmotifs he used in Inception probably worked against him here, but the searing Gravity score should have easily sewn this one up. The only thing I can think of is that the HPFA found the electronic elements of the score not to their liking, and so opted for something a little more traditional with Ebert's admittedly strong work. Still, at least Mandela and The Book Thief didn't win.
