10 Awesome 2014 Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

7. The Purge: Anarchy

The Pitch: Remember how the original The Purge would have been so much better if it was a sprawling action film that spilled out onto the streets and showed how the 12 hours of lawlessness affected the country at large? Yeah, that's basically what The Purge: Anarchy is, with the grizzled, ruggedly handsome Frank Grillo taking the lead role. Why It's Awesome: Anarchy is such an inventive, chaotic and fun film that it's easy to forgive its occasionally annoying supporting characters. Grillo is such an enticing lead, a bada** drifter who attempts to protect a group of vulnerable youngsters and help them make it through the night, that it's difficult not to get drawn into the group's night of hell, as they face off against an increasingly-tough array of enemies like a Rockstar video game brought to life. With a firm debt paid to the urban paranoia movies of the 1970s, and a palpable feeling of unpredictability, Anarchy keeps viewers on the edges of their seats while carving out some thrilling potential for where the series could go in the future. If it can remain this imaginative and keep following interesting new characters each time, there could be a lot of mileage in this barmy but brilliant concept. The third film, due for release next year, will reportedly be a prequel revolving around some of the events referenced in Anarchy.
