10 Awesome 2014 Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween
6. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
The Pitch: A Latino spin-off of the immensely successful Paranormal Activity series, taking place in Oxnard, California with a largely unknown cast. Why It's Awesome: Here's a movie that few had any expectations for whatsoever, but against tremendous odds, it basically turned out to be the best Paranormal since the first. What makes The Marked Ones work so well? For starters, it's easily the funniest film in the series, taking itself and its mythology a lot less seriously, well aware of how audiences responded to the dire fourth film in particular. What's more, the two teenage Hispanic protagonists are genuinely amusing and likeable, and the audience actually cares about them rather than some of the more obnoxious meat-puppets in the earlier films. With the dynamic duo constantly on the move rather than fixing their camera to stare at bedroom walls for minutes at a time, some unexpected gunplay and a killer plot twist, The Marked Ones is great in all the ways that the previous three films have been disappointing. Hopefully the filmmakers will take some of what they learned on this film and apply it to the upcoming fifth main film, The Ghost Dimension, due out in March next year.
