10 Awesome 2018 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck
3. Outlaw King
Why It Should've Sucked: The early word on this Robert the Bruce biopic from director David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) wasn't good, with its disastrous TIFF premiere resulting in critical pannings for its 137-minute run-time and poor pacing.
With the film already locked in for a Netflix release two months later, it's safe to say that expectations weren't high.
Why It Was Awesome: Thankfully, Netflix allowed Mackenzie to go back into the editing room and he eventually cut 20 minutes from his historical epic before it reached the general public.
IndieWire's David Ehrlich, among the few who sat through both cuts of the film, led the charge in calling for a re-appraisal, deeming the new version a vastly superior, wholly re-shaped new movie.
On its own merits, the Netflix version of Outlaw King is a terrifically entertaining film, led by a cracking performance from Chris Pine, gorgeous cinematography and wonderfully gnarly action sequences.
As a testament to the importance of getting the edit right, Outlaw King's slimmer streaming release provides a welcome corrective to all those scathing early reviews.
