If there's any justice in the world, Ethan Hawke will receive a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his astounding, perhaps career-best work in Paul Schrader's best film in literally decades.

After years out in the Hollywood wilderness, the Taxi Driver and Raging Bull screenwriter proves he still has something to say with this intoxication vision of a Pastor (Hawke) facing a major existential crossroads.

Hawke's measured performance makes the most of Schrader's erudite dialogue, creating one of the year's most fascinating and well-rounded characters in the process. Amanda Seyfried also delivers her finest work to date in a meaty supporting role.

While too "arty" and weird to score breakthrough Oscar success, the Academy would be insane to ignore Hawke's sublime work here.
