4. American Animals

A heist film like none you've ever seen before, American Animals dramatises the 2004 library theft at Kentucky's Transylvania University with tenacious aplomb.

Documentary filmmaker Bart Layton (The Imposter) ingeniously fuses documentary and drama to stunning effect, constantly pulling the audience out of the story to make them consider the reliability of the "characters", and at one point even inserting one of the real-life subjects into the narrative story.

This isn't a mere showy gimmick, though, and pays off Layton's clear fascination with how people perceive themselves within the context of their own legacies. Layton also impressively switches-up his tone constantly, especially once the heist takes place and things start to get disturbingly dangerous.

The central ensemble - Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, Jared Abrahamson, and Ann Dowd - are remarkable, bolstering one of the year's most daring movies you almost certainly didn't see.
