3. Harry Ellis - Die Hard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cBsdgJcT28 Die Hard has its share of badass characters, regardless of their allegiance; John McClane is, of course, the steely hero, and Hans Gruber is a fierce, intelligent villain. He also surrounds himself with generally smart baddies, so it's when McClane's wife Bonnie's co-worker Harry Ellis tries to play mediator that we meet the true moron of the piece. Not only is he presented as a thoroughly smarmy man who is totally out of his depth, he's also pretty sleazy as he clearly has designs on Bonnie, though thankfully he never gets to act on them as he's done away with soon enough. Whether it's his irritating laugh, his cocksure demeanour, or simply his poor negotiation skills, the guy just can't do anything right. When he tries to mediate between McClane and Gruber by getting McClane to return the detonators, McClane refuses, warning Ellis to stop trying to play the hero, but Ellis arrogantly persists, and when McClane still refuses, he is killed. It gives the film some pressing moral ambiguity but also does away with an extremely irritating character at the same time, so win-win.
