10 Awesome Directors Who Went Totally Insane (For One Movie)

6. Sam Raimi - For Love of the Game (1999)

for love of the game In 1999, either because he'd given himself a concussion on the way to work one day, or because he really, really needed cash fast, Sam Raimi decided to trade everything that was unique and good about his directorial style for the chance to helm one of the worst baseball movies ever made: For The Love of the Game, which stars Kevin Costner in another one of his epic Razzie-nominated performances. Here's a flick that sees the kinetic, frenzied director of The Evil Dead - for some reason - making a drama of soap opera-like quality. What the hell happened? Not only is For Love of the Game dull and generic in every single way, it reeks of Raimi in so very few. Roger Ebert rightly described this one as a "step back for Raimi," which couldn't be closer to the truth. It's totally the opposite of anything you might associate with the man behind the camera, and not in a good way (as, perhaps with the movie he made before this one, A Simple Plan). So what's the best way to ensure a bonafide flop? How about you get the director of Army of Darkness to shoot an earnest drama about baseball? That's the best way.
