10 Awesome Fan Theories That Improve Already Great Films
5. Lukes The Chosen One - Star Wars
The Theory: The Star Wars prequels introduced the notion of a Chosen One to the saga, a person who according to an old Jedi prophecy would "bring balance to the force". Throughout the prequels everyone believes this is Anakin, mainly based on the words of a desperate Liam Neeson and a high blood count of Force-giving-cell-things. But what if Little Ani wasn't the Chosen One at all? What if the Chosen One was actually Luke. According to a Jedi reference book, the proper prophecy is "in the time of greatest despair a child shall be born who will destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force." Now arguments can be made for either Skywalker actually destroying the Sith (Luke turned Vader back, but Anakin actually killed Sidious), but only one of them was born in a time of despair; Luke was born as the Empire rose, whereas the only despair when Anakin entered the galaxy was the taxation of a couple of trade routes. How It Improves The Film: From the perspective of people who adore the Original Trilogy this is obviously the preferential idea, putting their protagonist as the real hero of the saga. But beyond that it really strengthens the overall story, tying the two trilogies together; Anakin had the pressure of being the Chosen One pushed on him, feeding his descent into evil, whereas Luke had to make his own path, which allowed him to do the right thing.
