10 Awesome Films You've Probably Never Seen

Depending on which survey you believe, the average viewer spends 18 minutes each day (or 115 hours per year) browsing Netflix for something to watch. That’s 4.9 days spent wondering if Dolph Lundgren’s Shark Lake will suck as badly as Lake Placid Vs Anaconda (it does).

Clearly, this is part of a conspiracy designed to lower standards, dull sensations and pave the way for a Razzie Award winner’s assault on the White House. Now that all that nonsense is behind us, we can focus on the important stuff, such as deciding whether Fifty Shades Of Black is worse than Dirty Grandpa (jury’s still out).

Failing that, you could always settle for what old time critics call a “sleeper” – a movie that comes out of nowhere and knocks your socks off. Typically featuring no-name casts (or future stars in their salad days) and produced for Batman V Superman’s catering budget, these are the kinds of films that make the hunt worthwhile.

Better staged and acted than any of his video game adaptations, Rampage was Uwe Boll’s first movie to achieve mostly positive reviews, with even Variety calling it “uncompromising” and “distressing”. Largely improvised, the film takes place in a world of minimum wage jobs and branded stores with indifferent staff, where casual misanthropy is broadcast 24/7.

The story follows Bill Williamson (Brendan Fletcher), who’s either a product of his environment or a stone cold psychopath whose run-ins with several rude people serve to fuel his nihilism – the film doesn’t offer any easy answers and invites viewers to judge for themselves. Embarking on a shooting spree, he indiscriminately kills beauty shop employees as well as bank tellers, whose money he steals while telling them, “Everything you use it for is stupid and senseless – have a nice day.”

He burns some of the money, but he also keeps some for himself, which seems to contradict his statement that his mission was to “clean the world” for the rest of us.
