10 Awesome Horror Movies Set In The Future That You've NEVER Seen
8. Dead Space: Downfall
Fans of the Dead Space series of video games might be surprised to learn that there’s an animated film - well, two of them, actually - based on the franchise. That’s because 2008’s Dead Space: Downfall was originally a direct-to-video release, aka where movies usually go to die.
Serving as a prequel to the first game, Downfall takes place in the year 2508 aboard the spaceship Ishimura, which is designed to mine entire planets for their resources. Whilst harvesting one particular world, the crew of the Ishimura comes across a gigantic monolith-like structure referred to as The Marker.
Maybe they thought it would make them hallucinate fun colours like in 2001: A Space Odyssey. If so, they thought wrong.
The Marker instead brings the corpses of the dead back to life as hideous mutants. These are the “Necromorphs” that serve as the main antagonists of the game series, with this movie providing some backstory on their origin.
Whether you’ve played Dead Space or not, Downfall is a fantastically tense experience full of creatively produced blood and guts courtesy of its director, acclaimed comic book artist Chuck Patton.
You’re a sick man, Chuck - nice work.
