10 Awesome Horror Movies You Probably Missed In 2018

5. Are We Not Cats

After touring the film festival circuit for the past couple of years, filmmaker Xander Robin’s debut feature Are We Not Cats was finally released by indie label Cleopatra Films this year but remains a hidden gem of 2018 horror.

That’s probably because it’s the kind of weird indie horror that’s simply not everybody’s cup of tea. Adapted from Robin’s 2013 short of the same name, it follows two twentysomething outsiders (Michael Patrick Nicholson and Chelsea Lopez) who bond over their shared compulsion – trichophagia, or in layman’s terms, the urge to eat hair.

It’s a hard to define film that’s part dark love story and part body horror with elements of offbeat comedy and hipster mumblecore but rewards us with gritty yet vibrant cinematography and a climax that’s as gory as it is weirdly sweet.

While it’s difficult to know quite what to make of such a quirky horror, Are We Not Cats is a film that definitely sticks with you … kind of like a hairball in your throat.
