10 Awesome Horror Movies You Probably Missed In 2018
4. Ravenous
The second French-language zombie flick featured here, Ravenous and The Night Eats the World are proof our Gallic brethren are really cornering the market on refreshingly different takes on zombie horror.
Set in rural Quebec some months after a zombie apocalypse has befallen Canada, the film follows a group of survivors who join forces in hopes of finding a safe, uninfected haven. Director Robin Aubert pays homage to the conventions of the zombie genre to a certain extent. Like many a move before it the zombies in Ravenous are flesh-hungry, infect others via bites and best dispatched via a gunshot to the head.
But Aubert adds his own twist too. His zombies feel pain and engage in strange rituals in which they appear to worship towers they’ve assembled from everyday objects. It’s some comment on mankind’s inane consumerism, no doubt, but also makes Aubert’s zombies somehow scarier than the usual shambling, snarling undead we see. Add to that some stunning cinematography and a dark sense of humour and Ravenous is one hell of a worthy zombie offering.
Though It scooped Best Canadian Film at the Toronto International Film Festival Awards it managed to slip past most peoples’ radar but thanks to Netflix snapping it up, Ravenous is bound to start getting the widespread praise it really deserves.
