Banking an impressive $15.5 million at the box office, Upgrade didn’t go as unnoticed as some of the other films featured here.
Compare it with writer-director Leigh Whannell’s other big project this year Insidious: The Last Key which he wrote and produced and grossed over $167 million worldwide and you’ll see what moviegoers en masse were more inclined to see. Which is a shame really because whereas the latest Insidious is boring, Upgrade is bloody brilliant.

What could possibly go wrong?
All kinds of things obviously in a gory and dark-humoured cyberpunk body horror that pays homage to the likes of Death Wish (the original), Robocop and Tetsuo: The Iron Man while being wholly original. Quite possibly the most enjoyable collision of horror, action and sci-fi in recent memory.
