10 Awesome Movie Gunfights You've Probably Never Seen
5. Miller's Private War (The Veteran)
The Veteran is a British thriller from 2011 that stars Toby Kebbell as Miller, a soldier returning from Afghanistan. The estate he lives on is run by a violent street gang, and through the course of the story he learns this gang has possible links to terrorist groups. At the end of the film he decides to take matters into his own hands and wipe out as many of the gang as he possibly can. There's a stark simplicity to this firefight that's very refreshing. There's no music score or frantic editing to inject excitement, we just follow Miller in an almost documentary style as he opens fire on any gang members that cross his path. Far from being helpless the gang quickly rally to fight back, but Miller's training gives him a distinct advantage over their spray-and-pray tactics. There's also a feeling of authenticity to the scene, as Miller lays down suppressing fire and has to constantly reload instead of firing 500 bullets from a single magazine. And it wisely doesn't paint Miller's actions as heroic or glamorous, his trigger-happy ways instead result in the death of an innocent woman. For a low budget, independent movie this visceral scene is an impressive standout that puts a lot of it's bigger budget cousins to shame.
