3. The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) - Bye Bye Electricity
The 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still is
not a good film by any stretch of the imagination, but one of its few impressive moments is actually pretty damn callous when you think about it. In the original film, Klaatu disables the world's electricity temporarily, but makes pains to note that this will not include emergency services such as hospitals, and as a result, we can presume that aircrafts won't suddenly be careening into residential areas the world over. The power outage eventually ends, and everything goes back to normal by the end. However, the dumb as a bag of bones remake has a lavish, CGI-filled scene in which Klaatu causes a worldwide power outage, and we're supposed to think it's kind of awesome. The problem? The remake makes no mention of emergency services being exempt from the electromagnetic pulse, which didn't just temporarily disable technology, but actually kill it dead. The film ends with an inventive and dark climax, in which humans will have to search for a new power source, but while that momentuous task pushes on, what the Hell are all the hospitals supposed to do? We can only assume once the EMP went off, countless airplanes crashed into cities, and people on life support just flatlined. Charming.
