Like Little Miss Sunshine before it, Juno came out of nowhere and ensured it was the must see indie flick of the year - a curious little oddity that managed to both hilarious, culturally relevant, and unique. Starring Ellen Page in her breakthrough role - with the likes of Michael Cera, J.K. Simmons and Jason Bateman hiding in the wings - Juno tells the story of a teenager who ends up pregnant and finds herself in the midst of a teenage crisis - albeit a funny one. The problem, of course, stemmed from the fact that too much talking about Juno made Juno annoying. And it didn't help that the characters in this movie all talk in a heightened, hipster-ish fashion, spouting phrases like "Honest to blog" and using words like "home-skillet" as if that was okay. The script came courtesy of former stripper Diablo Cody, who was bound for the backlash train the moment she sat down to write it. Still, we tend to complain about how samey Hollywood movies are on a daily basis, and yet when something genuinely fresh comes along, we embrace it momentarily before declaring it "uncool." Juno does verge on the annoying, but it's still great.
