8. The Holy Mountain

Count on director Alejando Jodorowsky to deliver one of the weirdest cinematic experiences of the 1970s (and really, that's saying quite something) with The Holy Mountain, a film almost impossible to properly describe, because it's so open to interpretation (or a less-diplomatic description would be that it doesn't make a lick of sense). The film reaches a peak (sorry) of WTF at the very end of the film, as the film's alchemist character (played by Jodorowsky himself) reveals all the film equipment lying just outside the bounds of the frame. Jodorowsky even shouts "Zoom back camera!", a not so subtle suggestion that both the crew and the audience should depart from the Holy Mountain. He says "Real life awaits us", and then the film promptly ends. It's puzzled audiences for 40 years, and Jodorowsky largely chooses to let the film speak for itself; that is to say, it's not telling us a whole lot.
