10 Awesome Movies That Break The Fourth Wall

7. Jay and Silent Bob Stike Back

Kevin Smith has made no bones about the fact that he's a huge admirer of John Hughes, and so it follows that a couple of cinematic references to the classic director's style are likely to sneak their way into his own work. Surely one of the most mind-meltingly, hilariously meta films of all time, his brilliant and underrated Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back features a scene early on where Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) accost Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck). He ends up saying, "I don't think I'm alone in the world in imagining this flick may be the worst idea since Greedo shooting first, I mean, a Jay and Silent Bob movie...who'd pay to see that?", after which all three turn to the camera, and Smith gives an especially cheeky grin. Another scene occurs later on, when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are playing exaggerated versions of themselves, and Affleck tells Damon, "What have I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him", and true to form, they turn to the camera, presumably glaring at Smith. These scenes are totally cheeky and obvious, but there's no denying that if you drink Smith's Kool Aid, you'll get a massive kick out of it.
