10 Awesome Movies That Break The Fourth Wall

5. Spaceballs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeZ9HhHU86o There are two hilarious fourth wall-breaking moments in Mel Brooks' supremely underrated Star Wars spoof, the first of which occurs when the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) has his plan to save Planet Spaceball recounted to him by his Colonel, before turning to the audience and asking, "Everybody got that? Good!". The second occurs when one of his cronies actually puts the tape of Spaceballs into the ship's VCR to figure out what they have to do next; they catch up to the present point in the movie, and end up getting very, very confused. For its time, it was a pretty ambitious and clever way to draw attention to the film's absurd artifice, managing to make an extremely funny moment in the process that's widely regarded as the film's best gag. Even if the film was a little slow on the uptake in spoofing Star Wars, it still has plenty of comic punch thanks to smart jibes like this.
