5. The Terminator
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KeniFoiT-0 The Terminator is one of my favourite films of all time, so I don't take running it down lightly. That said, the film, which enjoys its 30th anniversary next year (eek!), is one of the most dated popular films of the 1980s, a tragic combination of style, fashion and the low budget that the flick was saddled with. First of all, the effects are absolutely awful; I remember watching the film as a young kid in the 90s and even then recoiling at the scene in which Arnie's T-800 removes his eyeball. I wasn't scared by what he was doing, I was more amused at how craptacular the effects were; it was clearly an animatronic head, and looked absolutely nothing like Schwarzenegger's face. Also, the stop-motion animation used for the final chase scenes are totally laughable today. Enhancing the dated feel is Brad Fiedel's cheesy synth-based score, which is still a blast to listen to, though it makes the film feel totally rooted in its time, and is starkly opposed to its sequel, which in terms of its effects and its score (again composed by Fiedel) still feels fresh today. Finally, there's the clothing codes; try watching the Tech Noir scene without laughing uproariously at the ridiculous duds that the club's dancing patrons are wearing.
