4. The Towering Inferno
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAvd1YlEEAU Just because The Towering Info was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture (and winning 3), that doesn't mean it hasn't aged badly. The classic disaster flick about a building on fire was a huge success and rightly so, though in the 39 years since its release, the whole set-up not only seems pretty hokey, but so does some of the logic employed by the characters. Case in point, there's a scene once the fire is raging in which Robert Wagner and a bedfellow are trapped with a fire billowing nearby. Wagner puts a towel over his head as he attempts to run through a burning room, but here's where things get a little silly; not more than two seconds into his run, he ends up running into a chair, and suddenly ends up bursting into flames immediately. Wagner gets to run around for a while, giving us a disturbingly protracted death (which is pretty cool and still looks good today) culminating in him tripping over a bit of glass and falling to his demise, but the stupidity of the character and the bizarre direction - where's the suspense in some jackass clumsily running straight into a fiery chair when he's just started his run? - undercuts the sheer horror of what's going on. After Wagner makes an exit, so too does his girlfriend, though it's not nearly as impressive because of the awkward direction and questionable effects of her plunge out the window.
