10 Awesome Movies That STILL Aren't On Blu-Ray

5. Iceman

Solaris 2002
Universal Studios

Like Frances, Iceman is one of the many all-but-forgotten classics from the '80s - the only problem is that it doesn't have Jessica Lange's Oscar-nominated performance to refresh your memory of its existence. What it did have though was a surprisingly mature narrative that, somehow, managed to turn a film centred on a 40,000 year-old frozen Neanderthal into a strangely touching tale about a man and his friend, as they taught each other about their own culture - a tale that Timothy Hutton and John Lone portrayed exquisitely.

It's simple yet effective and, if anything, it should be remembered as a shining example of how science fiction can indeed be used to tell profound stories. However, it hasn't exactly been welcomed into the 21st Century which, considering the depth of story, is a darn shame.

While the current home video version isn't exactly unwatchable, it is in dire need of an upgrade. The dull lighting in the base itself often leaves the film looking dated, while a number of wonderful arctic landscapes never fully get the appreciation they deserve.

We're halfway between Iceman's 30th and 40th anniversaries so, perhaps now Universal could finally remind the world that this highly underrated film exists by giving it the long overdue Blu-Ray release that it deserves.
