10 Awesome Movies That STILL Aren't On Blu-Ray
3. King Kong (1976)
The 1976 remake of King Kong may not have gone down quite as well as the classic original at the time of its release, but in the years that followed, it became something of a cult classic. Renowned for its campier approach, this larger-than-life spectacle was undoubtedly revolutionary for its time, with Rick Baker's outstanding effects even earning it an Academy Award.
Given how all King Kong remakes and sequels pride themselves on being visual marvels, it's quite irritating that this one hasn't received a mainstream Blu-Ray release yet. Though its special effects may not look as convincing when compared to Peter Jackson's 2005 remake (or even 2017's Kong: Skull Island), they're still a cutting-edge piece of history that should be appreciated in their full glory.
The film did receive the high definition treatment for a HD-DVD release (remember those?), before those responsible for that (French distributors StudioCacal) used it to produce a foreign language Blu-Ray for select European markets. Both this and a later re-release were incredibly short-lived and, as a result, they're virtually impossible to track down.
Though that same HD version would eventually surface on iTunes, it's still rather frustrating that Kong '76 never received a complete remaster nor a general Blu-Ray release from Paramount, especially when you factor in that Kong's recent resurgence in popularity coincided with the film's 40th anniversary.
