10 Awesome Movies With No Sympathetic Characters

9. Goodfellas

Martin Scorsese has made a literal art form out of making murderers, psychopaths and all-around a**holes charming and likeable, but that doesn't mean we're sympathetic when the house of cards inevitably comes crashing down.

Goodfellas is one of the greatest crime thrillers ever made, but because almost every single person on screen willingly involves themselves in the life of crime depicted, it's hard to much care for them when it all goes wrong.

Protagonist Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) wife Karen (Lorraine Bracco) certainly doesn't get a free pass: she is seduced by the money and the glamour of the mobster's wife lifestyle, and therefore totally complicit in its fallout.

The best argument for a sympathetic character is surely Spider (Michael Imperioli), but considering he works at a mob bar, returns to work after Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) shoots him in the foot and then bad-mouths the guy knowing his violent temper, he was totally asking for it. So no, he doesn't count.
