10 Awesome Plot Twists That Totally Saved Awful Horror Movies

4. Final Destination 5

Dead Silence
New Line Cinema

In Final Destination 5, the Grim Reaper finds himself once again picking off a group of people who cheated death. Although there's nothing particularly terrible about this instalment, FD5 comes across as another needless horror sequel, rehashing the best ideas from its predecessors. The domino-effect death sequences are entertaining, but lack the same oomph as the original.

However, the last five minutes leaves viewers utterly blindsided. After Sam and Molly believe they have evaded the Grim Reaper, they decide to take a vacation to Paris.

Just before their plane takes off, Sam notices a passenger being escorted off, ranting about how everybody is going to die. The viewer should recognise this passenger is Alex - the lead character in Final Destination, who predicted the plane he was on would explode moments before it did. Although Sam and Molly assume Alex is nuts, viewers know the duo's fate is sealed.

What makes this twist more impactful is the fact we should've seen it coming, since there's many clues the story takes place in the past. None of the music predates 2000, which was when the original film was set. We regularly see characters using clunky keyboards and old-fashioned mobile phones. If you noticed Isaac's co-worker's gift certificate expires in 2001, you would've realised the film is a prequel straight away.
