8. Saw X (2023)

A late contribution to the Saw franchise, X shoehorns in more Jigsaw with a mid-series prequel. The movie brings back the original Jigsaw killer (with Tobin Bell delivering a surprisingly considered turn this time round) for a hitherto uncharted adventure in torture and pain. After being grifted out of a hefty chunk of swag by a team of con artists who promised to remove his cancer, Jigsaw hunts them down and treats them to a good ol' room full of traps.
The traps are the usual grim setup and payoff, but with a few surprises and creative twists, not least the bait and switch of the headline eye trap (which doesn't actually happen for real). A new snarling baddie takes centre stage, facing down a nasty new array of trials - and Jigsaw himself even gets locked in one of his own machines, giving him the rarely-seen chance to demonstrate his humanity.
However, given you know the fate and motivations of Jigsaw and his cohorts, it can only dig up these old characters and parade them around for a couple of hours before slotting them back into their well-established, well-trodden timeline. It's pleasingly nostalgic, but the film is a thoroughly inessential piece of the Saw mythos, and one which - like the bulk of the Saw franchise - doesn't call for repeat viewing.
Director Kevin Greutert obviously didn't anticipate that the eye-sucking trap would serve as something of a metaphor for the whole affair; great for a single watch.
