6. Bonnie and Clyde
We now go back in time and across the Atlantic to Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie and Clyde is the classic road movie from 1967 with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway playing the notorious crime duo Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker. The film opens in the middle of the Great Depression: America is a broken nation and there is civil unrest. It is against this backdrop that Clyde and Bonnie meet when Clyde attempts to steal Bonnies mothers car. Youd think this would hardly be the beginning of a beautiful friendship but Bonnie is so dissatisfied with her humble life that she decides to join the handsome rogue and they become partners in crime. Their amateur holdups are exhilarating despite the fact that theyre not always successful. Bonnie and Clyde are portrayed as a sexy outlaw couple which at the time was the perfect cinematic antidote to corrupt America. Where are they going? They meet in a dusty Texas town and continue onwards to terrorize banks and store owners in Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana and New Mexico. Along their road trip they pick up friends such as the dim-witted C.W. Moss and Clyde's brother and sister in law Buck and Blanche. The gang kidnap a couple: Eugene and Velma. The new group formation get along alright until Bonnie finds out that Eugene is a mortician and the couple get dumped by the side of the road. This event has two functions: 1. it suggests Bonnie does not want to be reminded of her own mortality and 2. perhaps Bonnie feared for her life as an outlaw. She was not as happy with her criminal life and she could see how it was going to end for them. Whats more; Bonnie and Blanche don't get a long and they engange in a continual cat fight. Buck is killed in a police raid and Blanche held in police custody that leads the police to C.W. When C.W. is captured he helps them set out a trap that will bring down our protagonists. Their journey comes to an end and a rather unfortunate one at that.
