3. The Slumber Party Massacre
The Slumber Party Massacre is what happens when feminist writer, Rita Mae Brown, parodies the slasher genre which, to this day, is mainly focused on half-naked women running from some bloke in a mask. The producers, for some reason, filmed it as a straight-up slasher film, which makes some of the jokes even more deadpan where the script and the filming dont quite meet. Eighteen-year-old Trishs parents go out of town for the weekend and, as this was the 80s, rather than having a huge blowout party, she has a girly sleepover. Meanwhile, a serial killer who has a fondness for power tools escapes prison (dont they always?) and somehow ends up in that same suburban town. The Slumber Party Massacre generally received negative reviews, which would make some sense were it to be viewed as a straight-up slasher. However, it is darkly funny, with the very phallic drill poking fun at the possible themes behind the stabbings that often occur in slashers because it takes a lot of love for a person to do this. Despite the mediocre reception, The Slumber Party Massacre managed to spawn three sequels, so dont sweat it if youre left wanting more!
