7. General Zod - Man Of Steel
And in the time it takes to load a webpage we're onto the second appearance of Zack Snyder , suggesting a complete lack of understanding in what makes great villains so great. Man Of Steel wasted a lot of things. A modern Krypton was made up of hammy dialogue. The promise of the real world affected by the arrival of Superman was negated when nothing felt real. But worst of all Zod, a character than represented so much to Henry Cavils Kal-El, ended up being your stock angry man. At some point during the mammoth production (it was shot in 2011) there was clearly an intention for more to be made of the set up of Kryptonian society; the planets inhabitants are bred for particular purposes (soldiers, scientists, politicians). The idea is lifted straight from Platos Republic, which is itself referenced in the movie, with a young Clark seen reading it during a flashback. Zod is a soldier, bred solely for war, giving him a motivation unique from the typical super villain; he has no choice but to be evil. This is a slightly different interpretation of the character from what was in the comics and previous films, but given how different from the canon the rest of the film is thats not an issue. What is an issue is that this fresh promise of a reimagined Zod didn't explore the interesting sides, leaving him to become another superpowered being to smash buildings.
