10 Awful 2014 Movies That Deserved To Bomb At The Box Office

7. Transcendence

Budget: $100 million Box office: $103 million There's a huge irony in the fact that Johnny Depp's character in Transcendence, Dr. Will Caster, is attempting to construct an artificial intelligence machine capable of the full range of human emotions - a similar machine would have come in handy for the creation of the characters inhabiting this lacklustre sci-fi flop. The buzz around the announcement that Christopher Nolan's regular cinematographer Wally Pfitser was to direct his own feature film was somewhat inexplicable - after all, DPs don't have a great track record when it comes to taking on the director's helm. Transcendence was no exception - while it might have looked pretty nice in parts, the slow, boring plot and monotone performances made wading through this two hour film feel like an eon. It would be nice to see a cinematographer with real visual flair tackle his own feature - Emmanuel Lubezki and Roger Deakins spring to mind - but even then there's no guarantee the results would be much better.
