Appearing as frustrated psychologist Ben Harman in both Murder House and Apocalypse as well as psychotic serial killer Bruce in 1984, Dylan McDermott has also made a name for himself in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and Olympus Has Fallen. But one role the Golden Globe-winning McDermott probably wishes he didn’t take was officer Sean Wallace in dystopian sci-fi Automata.

Set in a near-future world that has been decimated by solar flares where robots have become labour for humanity, this outing sees McDermott co-star alongside Antonio Banderas as insurance investigator Jacq (pronounced "Jack").

When Wallace files a report of gunning down a robot modifying itself (something which their programming is supposed to prohibit), the duo find themselves diving down a film noir flavoured rabbit hole to uncover the truth behind this puzzling quandary.

While the initial premise and striking set design may grab your attention here, Automata soon proves to be a muddled disaster.

Panned for a messy, illogical script riddled with countless plot holes, this genre piece essentially takes parts from the likes of Blade Runner, The Terminator, and The Matrix and mashes them together into something that just doesn’t work.
