10 Awful Films The Lord Of The Rings Actors Want You To Forget

8. Viggo Mortensen (Aragon) - Psycho

In 1998, Gus Van Sant got the chance to remake Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, Psycho.

Since Van Sant thought the original couldn't be bettered, he decided to redo the film shot-for-shot. This proved to be a disastrous idea since Van Sant simply recreated an already existing movie rather that putting his own stamp on the property.

The talented cast, which included Julianne Moore and William H. Macy weren't able to save the movie since they didn't get the chance to artistically explore their characters. Instead, they were forced to imitate the performances from the previous movie, rendering their acting wooden and hollow.

Sadly, Viggo Mortensen is no exception. Even though he portrays Marion Crane's boyfriend, Sam Loomis, the pair have zero chemistry. Whether he's meant to be angry or affectionate, he usually comes across as confused.

Of course, this isn't the actor's fault. Mortensen has proven to be a truly gifted actor in movies like A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. It's clear he did the best he could in this doomed remake but was compromised by Van Sant's blunder.

In a way, it's good that Gus Van Sant remade Psycho shot-for-shot because it taught filmmakers NEVER to do it again.
