10 Awful Horror Movies That Need To Be Remade

5. Area 51

Wishmaster movie
Blumhouse

Ah, yes, another found-footage movie that never lived up to its setting.

The thrill of exploring Area 51 (even in 2015, four years before the Storm Area 51 meme) is ubiquitous, as the mystery of that place has always captured people's imaginations. Plus, this was the second feature from Oren Peli, the director of Paranormal Activity. It should have been a scary piece of fun, but, of course, it was dire.

Everything you would expect from this film is what you get. A group of people enter the infamous base, discover alien secrets, get attacked by said extra-terrestrials and wind up dead - go figure. It's an incredibly bland and uninspired film, which is devastating as there's boundless creativity that can come from the mystery of Area 51.

Giving this concept another go-around is essential, as it's perfect for the found-footage genre. Seeing a troupe of misguided conspiracy theorists biting off more than they can chew as they experience a slew of unexplainable phenomena is ideal for the social-media-crazed modern age.

A remake could also take a far more abstract approach, making the aliens far less conventional than the sci-fi schlock fans are used to and going for something far weirder. The movie should seem like a terrifying fever dream, almost like an extended version of the probe scene from the underrated sci-fi flick Fire in the Sky.
