6. Mark Wahlberg & Zooey Deschanel - The Happening

Night Shyamalan's supernatural train-wreck The Happening fails to convince, the most troubling implausibility is the central marriage between Mark Wahlberg Zooey Deschanel's characters. For one thing, Wahlberg is about a decade older than her - though the age gap looks even bigger because Deschanel can easily pass for a few years younger than she is - yet the main issue is that, personality-wise, it's just difficult to believe that these two people would ever hook up or be attracted to one another. We're supposed to suspend our disbelief and separate actors from their previous roles, but it's sort of difficult when, in the case of actors like these two, their own personalities transpire into so many of their roles. Wahlberg is the no-nonsense bad-boy and Deschanel is the cute hipster; when do these two personality types ever mesh together well? Add to this the fact that their acting styles - Wahlberg plays it curiously straight, Deschanel is trying to have a laugh - are completely at odds with one another, and it makes for an awkward case of two poorly-matched actors who are not on the same page at all.
