10 Awful Movie Death Retcons EVERYONE Hated

9. Han Lue - F9

The case of Han Lue (Sung Kang) in the Fast and the Furious franchise sure is a curious one.

Han was first introduced in the third movie, Tokyo Drift, where he was also killed in a car accident. Nevertheless, due to the next three movies taking place chronologically before Tokyo Drift, Han was able to appear in them.

The end of Fast and Furious 6 caught back up to Han's death, while revealing that the culprit was in fact Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), but in the ninth film, F9, Lan was laughably returned from the dead.

While Han was a popular enough character that many fans were excited to see him back, ultimately the no-effort attempt to explain his survival left many fans hugely underwhelmed.

Han explains that he worked with Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) to stage his death, anticipating that Deckard would attempt to kill him and using the opportunity to fake his own demise.

Han simply mentions that Mr. Nobody had a "magic trick" which allowed them to stage his death, the implication being that it might've been a hologram of some form.

Even so, the lack of clarity about Han's not-death irritated much of the fanbase, as though the filmmakers knew they couldn't explain his survival in a plausible way and so just... didn't really bother.

This isn't the only time the franchise has retconned a character's death - Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), anyone? - but after so much hype about Han's return, the particulars of it were hugely unsatisfying.
