10 Awful Movie Remakes With Silver Linings You Can't Ignore
8. Godzilla (1998)
The Movie: The moment the teaser trailer hit cinemas audiences were instantly aware of the motives of Roland Emmerich - the image of Godzilla's foot crashing down on a skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex told us that he was clearly more concerned with trumping Spielberg's Jurassic Park than he was with remaining faithful to the spirit of the classic Japanese Toho productions of the 1950s. Not content with plagiarising from Jurassic Park, right down to the mini-Godzilla/Velociraptors, Emmerich served up a chicken-legged creation which bore little resemblance to the monster we're all familiar with and reduced the entire enterprise to a mindless smashing up of New York City. The Silver Lining: Despite being a deeply flawed movie on so many levels you could fill a book recounting them all, at least there's a healthy dose of humour and a sense of fun pervading the movie which is absent from the more recent remake. It's questionable just how much of the comedy was intended by the filmmakers, but at least a few sniggers offset the general disappointment many felt at the time of its release.
