6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

This is a movie specifically made for the Tolkien fanboys, and in a way Im glad it exists for those who had issues with the necessary truncations of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But The Hobbit is just the opposite a bloated, totally unnecessary, slavish adaptation that exists solely to capitalize on the Lord of the Rings brand. The original trilogy has its flaws but it was a risky labor of love that helped revolutionize how sequels are filmed. The Hobbit is as stale as the Lord of the Rings trilogy was fresh, yet it still became a monstrous hit that pleased the fan base. Thats fine, but I already equate this new trilogy with the Star Wars prequels. Everything about this version of The Hobbit is the poor mans Lord of the Rings, and while I hold out hope that the sequels will not stall as much as An Unexpected Journey, I have a feeling they will. In a few years, Ill only remember this film as the unfortunate reason why we have fewer Guillermo Del Toro movies than we should.
