10 Awful Movies That Wasted An A-List Cast

7. Planet of the Apes

Suicide Squad
Fox

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is now best-remembered for introducing the word 're-imagining' into the cultural lexicon and the laughable attempt at putting its own stamp on the original's jaw-dropping twist ending, but despite being greeted with an apathetic shrug it still went on to become the ninth highest-grossing movie of 2001.

Mark Wahlberg may have rightfully come under fire for his charisma-free and wooden turn in the lead role, but the vast majority of his cast-mates also failed to elevate the material above mediocrity, with the notable exception of a scenery-chewing Tim Roth.

Helena Bonham-Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti and Kris Kristofferson were all capable of much better than their one-note characters required, but none of them seemed to have much interest or motivation other than looking the part, making Planet of the Apes a visually stunning but questionably acted curiosity.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
