Johnny Depp rose to prominence as one of independent cinema's leading lights, but his rapid ascent to the top of the Hollywood A-list following the success of Pirates of the Caribbean coincided with an alarming downturn in the quality of his output.

Mortdecai was panned by critics and sank without a trace at the box office as audiences turned their backs on Depp's latest eccentric character, but David Koepp's unforgivably lazy comic caper somehow managed to rope in a bevvy of A-listers to lend support for a movie that was no doubt a lot more fun to make than it was to sit through.

Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany and Jeff Goldblum all turned up for the paycheck, with Depp even casting his favorite actor Paul Whitehouse in a small role to further the idea that this was little more than a cack-handed vanity project for everyone involved.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
