The Ensemble: Bradley Cooper, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Kathy Bates, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Hector Elizondo, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Emma Roberts, Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift In case you didn't know, Garry Marshall (director of
Valentine's Day) is well into his 70s. Right now, he's 78- years-old. He was 75 when he directed this movie. I'm not one to be ageist - I'm fully supportive of directors like Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen making movies nowadays - but what business does 75-year-old Garry Marshall have directing something like this? Oh, he created
Happy Days, you say? Yeah, 40 years ago! Anyway, I don't know why Marshall was given the keys to this so late into his career, but it was a bad idea. When the cast signed on to star in this thing, they probably thought it sounded pretty interesting, with potential and everything. Interconnected stories based around Valentine's Day, featuring some of the hottest talent around? Count me in! And yet the name of the movie should've been a giveaway: just like the holiday,
Valentine's Day just wants you money, and serves no real purpose. I'm not sure anybody is even trying to be good in this movie, either: given the size of the huge and relatively talented ensemble, that's just embarrassing.
