10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies
5. Halloween (2007)
Horror fans were skeptical when they learned Rob Zombie was remaking Halloween, since it seemed unfeasible to match the original. But since the franchise had gone off the rails at this point, starting from scratch seemed to be the best option.
To everyone's surprise, 2007's Halloween turned out better than expected. Rather than being a carbon copy, this version carved its own identity, showing a more brutal Michael Myers, while maintaining the spirit of John Carpenter's work.
Unfortunately, the film takes a while to get into gear. Within the first 30 seconds of 1978's Halloween, we witness Michael slaying his sister in cold blood. On the other hand, Zombie's opening spends too much time on Michael's dysfunctional family.
This decision could've worked, since the series has never explored Michael's upbringing or his relationship with his relatives. But because Michael is depicted as a force of nature rather than a human being, this backstory dilutes the character of his mystery. Even though you can see where the director was coming from, it's not that interesting to learn Michael became the embodiment of evil because he had a bad childhood.
