10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies
4. The Evil Dead
More often that not, it takes time for even the best filmmakers to find their feet. However, Sam Raimi had no such trouble, since his debut feature, The Evil Dead, earned nearly a hundred times its budget and turned him into a hotshot director almost overnight.
The Evil Dead had such an influence on splatterfest comedy and low-budget horror, it's easy to forget the film's underwhelming prologue. The picture opens with Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his friends driving towards the cabin. Although we get some signature Raimi shots, this eight-minute intro is a slog. Because we don't learn anything vital during this sequence, it's safe to assume it was inserted to extend the run-time.
If you thought Bruce Campbell's natural charisma could save this scene, think again. Although Ash is a wisecracking badass in Evil Dead II, it's clear Campbell hadn't found the character in this instalment, making Ash come across as a pretty generic protagonist.
Despite the fact the Evil Dead remake failed to live up to expectations, it began with a genuinely haunting scene. Shame the same can't be said about the original.
