10 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Horror Movies
3. An American Werewolf In London
Because the special effects in An American Werewolf in London are out of this world, it's easy to neglect everything else that made the film so good. Not only is John Landis' script tight, the actors' comic delivery and impeccable timing gives every line an extra punch.
But based on how uncreative the first scene is, you'd never suspect you were watching one of most influential horror features of the decade. Rather than starting with a shot of a full moon or a wolf, the out-of-focus camera lingers on a featureless landscape while the credits roll.
After that, we're introduced to backpackers David and Jack, who are hitching a ride on a sheep truck. Because the script was written by the brains behind The Blues Brothers and Clue, you expect some great banter between the pair.
Instead, we get some generic dialogue resembling bad improv. The line "I have to make love to her, she has no choice," sounds like it was written by Tommy Wiseau. Coupled with the unnatural performances and badly lit footage, there's nothing here worth praising.
Even if you've seen An American Werewolf in London a dozen times, you'd struggle to recall any memorable dialogue from the beginning, apart from the classic, "That sheep s**t in my pack!"
